I have used a stj w/seal successfully. I have had trouble making the "connection" adapt so that it doesn't leak air. Any suggestions, looks like you connected the hose directly to the old stj spout.
.....all came from Home Depot. There is a section in plumbing that is for repair and replacement of lines and fittings for refrierators that dispence water through the door. They are all slip on/off lock fittings and come apart as easily as they go together. I use 3/8 OD-1/4ID fittings and line for all my homemade tubes. My STJ uses a straight "male" 3/8OD-1/4ID to replace the STJ spout. I held it in with a brass nut but I think that is overkill and some 2 part fast setting epoxy applied to the inside and outside is more than enough to hold the fittings and make sure it is air/water tight. ....Your in luck I still have one in its bag-its a "WATTS 1/2 inch compression nut"-"A-203". I remember it was NOT a tight fit, it needed teflon tape on the fitting to beef it up but when you get it (the nut) to bite and seal (so-so) it all with the 5 min 2 part epoxy as in my pic it is a good sea,l water and air tight. If I had to do it all again I would skip the nut and pay attention to the placement of the epoxy on the insde and outside of the jar. Maybe just place a washer over the fitting, but make sure it is completely sealed with the epoxy.
....Her's a few pics of what can be done out of local shops with off the shelf materials, ans a closeup of a comfort seal made from 7/16 inch tube and epoxy.

I looked at the lamp globe the last time I was there and the glass looked rather thin so I did not even bother picking one up. I thought of getting the fittings you are using too but I was too cheap to buy another glass drill
....the globe I have is NOT glass its plastic, I wouldnt use a glass one, like you said to thin for my taste. The plastic one is the most comfortable oif all the tubes and has the same volume as the STJ. Look around you might find the plastic one.
