"Automatic" Pumping

Post by fw01 »

I've had this idea in my head that I can't try out because I don't have an electric pump. I thought I would pass it along and maybe someone who does have one could test it out.

This is all based on the assumption of how the electric pumps work. The ones I've seen have a vac guage and I'm assuming you can set the pressure and they will self regulate. I'm guessing you can set to say 4-5 in mg and it will run till it gets there and shuts off, if the vac drops it will run to restore it.

If this is right, what you would do is poke a tiny whole in the air hose basicaly replicating a leaky seal. Shouldn't be a big deal with an electric pump as should easily be able to keep up with a small leak.

Then you put a timer in-line with the power cord that will switch the pump on and off for intervals of maybe something like, on 8 minutes/of 2 minutes, or something in that neighborhood. Not 100% sure what you could use for this, but it wouldn't be hard to find or even make one.

Basically is you end up with a "two cycle" system. When "on", the pump runs, vacuum is maintained, air is leaking but at a rate much slower than the pump can restore it so it would just cycle on and off to keep a vacuum. Then when "off", the pump is switched off by the timer and air continues to leak and your vacuum slowly drops to give you a break. Then the system goes "on" again and the pump starts running you'll still need a decent seal to re-establish a vacuum, but I figure with a small strap or similar holding it next to your body you could do it without having to hold it next to you with your hand.

(You would have to experiment with the on/off times and the rate the system looses vac due to the hole. Also it's been my experience that shorter, more frequent breaks are as good or better than pumping for something like 20 on/5 off.)

You probably guessed where I'm going with this is being able to "sleep pump". If you could get something like this to cycle on/off and be able to re-establish a vacuum with each cycle This may actually work. You don't even really need to go all the way to 0 on the off cycle. Even if it drops only to 1 in on the off time that's still enough for a good break and wouldn't 100% loose seal before the pump started again.

I've been able to pump to as much as 18" in my monster tube but it takes 6 hours or more. How great would it be to go to bed and wake up with huge balls?

What do you think? Does this sound crazy? Has anyone ever tried something similar?

well, i can see where it would be nice to pump while asleep, but i don't see how you could maintain a seal while it goes on and off all the time...but i am sure someone that has some ingenuity could probably perfect what you are talking about, sure would be nice to have something like that....
I've been trying to think if the idea could be simplified without having to have such a complicated timer/regulator. I saw some industrial size pressure regulators on the web used as adjustable over pressure valves. They are spring loaded valves that can be set to a given pressure and if it goes over the valve opens enough to equilize. You need the opposite for a vaccuum but I think they have those too. However I didn't see any small enough for this type of use.

With something that simple any pump would work and the timer becomes simple on off.

I also tested a simple 12V bicycle pump with a low pressure inlet/outlet and found it worked great. It pumps fast which could be slowed probably by reducing the voltage and doesn't hold vaccum which could be fixed with a 1-way valve. I wouldn't use it on a small cylinder, but it would work if using a large one. Plus it's noisy.

I'm trying to work out a system that will vary the setting on a bleeder valve to 'ride' the pressure up and down, similar to what Doniger has. Post up any ideas you have, guys. :)

Russ
