That statement might be true in your experience, but I have seen nothing but proof that there is a definite and clear correlation between one's overall health and erection quality. (I guess one needs to define "erection quality" to some degree.) Even without any medical proof, it only stands to reason that our evolutionary biology hinges upon our species to be fit to make children. Incorrect. What you are referring to is "venous leak", a common condition that prevents penile blood from escaping, thus preventing a man from the ability to maintain an erection. He may get good erections, but he can't keep it going long enough to have intercourse....since erections are not dependent on blood flow to your dick but more about stopping blood flow out of your dick.

I can relate with other endurance sports i engage in. I started training for triathlon in my mid 50's. Before that I was pretty fat and slovenly which didn't diminish my sex drive or erection quality. Even though I carried more weight than I should have I remained horny as hell and hard as a rock for a good 30 years. After beginning serious endurance training I noticed sex drive and erection quality waned. It took longer to get in the mood and longer to reach climax. When on endurance rides lasting days I have no erections and no drive to fuck. Same as when I'm training hard close to a triathlon event. Once either event is complete. within a week or so I'm back to wanting to fuck anything with a pussy. I've realized over the last 15 years doing these sports that certain levels of training overrides libido and erection quality is diminished.
