Elliptical cylinder sizing

Post by sdk »

Hope this saves others getting it wrong. I just did some very approximate calculations on the entry hole per square inch of rectangular (elliptical) VS circular. It seems that a 1.75 x 2 (3.5 sq") might be needed to fill the gap.
1.25 x 1.75 rect = 2.19 sq"
1.50 round = 2.36 sq"
1.75 round = 2.43 sq"
1.50 x 2.0 rect = 3.0 sq"
2.0 round = 3.14 sq"
1.75 x 2.25 rect = 3.94 sq"
2.25 round = 3.98 sq"
2.50 round = 4.91 sq"
2.0 x 2.50 rect = 5.00 sq"
2.75 round = 5.99 sq"
2.25 x 2.75 rect = 6.19 sq"
3.00 round = 7.07 sq"
3.25 round = 8.35 sq"

I just dug this old thread up doing research on elliptical cylinders and thought these were super helpful calculations by SDK.
I pump in a 1.75 round and like he pointed out, there's a bit of a gap in the elliptical sizes around that mark. Need to get bigger I guess?

These calculations are nonsense.
The area of a 2.0x1.5“ ellipse is 3.0*pi/4=2.36 sq in

Yep, near enough to perfect b-o-c.

The formula for the area of an ellipse is r1 x r2 x pi. so for a 2x1.5 that would be 1x0.75x3.13416 = 2.36 in2

The rest:

Size Area
1.25 x 1.75 rect 1.72
1.50 round 1.77
1.75 round 2.41
1.50 x 2.0 rect 2.36
2.0 round 3.14
1.75 x 2.25 rect 3.09
2.25 round 3.98
2.50 round 4.91
2.0 x 2.50 rect 3.93
2.75 round 5.94
2.25 x 2.75 rect 4.86
3.00 round 7.07
3.25 round 8.30
