Lactated Ringers vs Saline

Post by Balanceact »

Hey guys, recently got my hands on a couple of LR bags. Just wondering what some people's experiences have been using them as opposed to saline?

I don't really like the sting on saline in the shaft where I like to infuse mostly.

I've looked online of the safety profile and it looks like it could be the same as saline just with the risk of allergic reaction or hypersensitivity. It also gets absorbed faster and stings less.

What experiences have you guys had with it? Has anyone felt "off" after using it?

Only tried it the one time, and that was decades ago. I didn't have any issues at the time.

It has a lower osmolarity than Saline, which means it causes osmotic swelling of your cells due to water being directly absorbed by them. This is the opposite of how D10 reacts (D10 it pulls water from your cells and also from interstitial fluid between the cells, which is why it takes a few hours to stop swelling, that's a slow process). Ringers could technically cause your cells to get very upset : I don't have information handy on what osmolarity tissues can generally withstand before rupturing. So maybe take it easy volume-wise when first trying it.

I can say with absolute sureness that the infusion of sterile water WILL cause tissue damage. That has been discussed on here a few times over the past decades (man I'm old).

No worries. I've been lurking here since I was 19 and now in mid 30s. I asked about it because some people use it and say its great and others like yourself err on caution. Thanks for the info!

I've done LR few times. I like it, doesn't burn as bad as saline can and in my experience absorbs a lot faster than saline or dex so you're not stuck inside for so long. Next time I order a shipment it'll definitely be included again.

Fair point. I had forgotten about that. I switched to Dextrose because i was annoyed with the sting of saline.
