Can it be done straight from the syringe or do you have to attach tubing to reach the bladder?

There's no need to go into the bladder. You can just fill your urethra, and push like you're peeing to open the sphincter. But you have to be careful with the pressure. High pressure will hurt, because the fast-moving water will have a lower pressure in the sphincter, causing it to collapse, then reopen, very quickly (like the opening of a balloon letting the air out going PHBBBTBTT).

I've never needed any lube. It's a liquid after all

There have been a few times I've gotten close to cumming, but I never came just from the water alone. It does make it really easy to go over the edge, though.

Gentle pressure is better. I've found that stronger pressure feels good - to a point. Then it starts to hurt. I think what happens is something like when you let the air out of a balloon and the tip goes PFFBBLLLBB except it's your urethra doing that, and that does not feel good.
