5% Dextrose & .9% Sodium Chloride vs 5% Dextrose

Post by cd.bianca »

Specifically I'd like to know the difference between these two:

I've used L6100 before with good results.

I have L5100 now and would to use it however I want to know more about it. If the 5% dextrose is in a solution, what is the solution? It says dextrose and water for injection. I thought .9% sodium chloride was the closest to whats best for the body but this just says water. 1. is it safe for inflation? 2. Is it different if so how? The ph and everything seems the same in both. What would a Dr. use one or the other for?

Thanks to anyone who knows!

I'm not a doctor, but both solutions are safe to use, I think. I expect L6100 will have quicker and larger results than L5100, I tried both.

5%dex plus 0.9 has a higher osmolarity, so it will swell more than 5%dex on its own

I am wondering what the 5% dextrose is mixed with if it's not saline?

unless it's specified otherwise, 5% dex (D5) is diluted in sterile water: 5% dextrose by mass. It's somewhere near the same osmolarity as Normal Saline (NS). I looked up the numbers for osmolarity one time but I can't recall where I put the information. I thought I had posted it here on the forum but there are a lot of posts on here.
