Have you tried just using your mouth?

I had a pump from Harbour Freight but it was a dry pump only.
Didnt like it.
the gauge was handy as a point of reference but i dont know how accurate it was.

Make sure the tube fits. I found if its too big its harder to seal. This happens to me when I take too much time off.
Shave. bare skin seals better.
Use a good lubricant. Pipefitter suggested hair conditioner and it has worked great for me.

How are you connecting the tube to the jar? is it a STJ?
Some guys just slide the tube in along with everything else. I havent had success doing this.
I took a STJ and stuck the tube in the valve hole and sealed it with Gorilla Glue.

The pressure does not stay at the level where I start but every 5 min I readjust the pressure.
Also it falls and give a natural break and a rise and fall in pressure.

I have a monster tube, and a bull master magnum tube.

1) Suck on the other end of that adapter using lung/diaphragm power.
2) to keep the air from returning back into the tube place the tip of your tongue over the opening.
3) release the connector
4) Mouth suction makes a higher vacuum than lung power.
5) enjoy!

Mityvac makes great pumps, they're a bit expensive but are accurate and tough.

Plastic version is cheaper:

but more fragile, I dropped mine once too often and broke the handle.

I replaced it with their metal one and it's great if a bit noisy:

It does vacuum and pressure and will dent the floor rather than breaking :)

Cheers!

The Harbor freight hand pump is around $20 made of brass and uses the same accurate gauge. Just sayin'.

Actually the mityvac does have a pretty cool steampunk look to it....
