Has anyone tried the refrigerant vacuum pumps now being offered by Harbor Freight? They all pull to full vacuum so they would have to be regulated, hardware for that is pretty straightforward. I'm including the link to the least expensive one. If anyone has any input I'd appreciate it.

This is a "Venturi-type" vacuum regulator which means its needs an "air" supply in order for it operate (a compressor for example). They do offer a manual vacuum pump though: http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?Itemnumber=92474. It is proly lowest price you're going to fine for this type of pump. They do occasionally sell it for as low as 15.99 if your not in any hurry.

I have a venturi type vacuum pump. You just need an air compressor to run it. It works great but takes a lot of air so your compressor will run a lot. I use a jar with an aquarium air line and once I get a good vacuum, i pull out the line and turn off the compressor until its time for a refresher vacuum.

Yes, as I mentioned above, some kind of device is required to move air through a "Venturi-type" vacuum regulator. When you consider the added expense of an air compressor (unless your fortunate to already have one) the cost can become prohibitive. This little device found at Bed Bath & Beyond is a very attractive alternative. I was lucky enough to have a coupon lowering the price price to 9.99.

I have two and hardly ever use any of my manual pumps any more. It can pull a 20 - 22 inHg and is very easy to adapt by adding a hose with suitable fitting. tho it's not necessary, I added an inline gauge and one-way valve for my convenience.

That's one of the many pluses on this gadget, it's very quite. You can even tone it down more by muffling the vents which are only on the side shown. The gauge is from a broken POS Mityvac (The Mityvac really is crap for what you have to pay for em. The Actron from Harbor is far superior). If you're in search of a gauge though, they can be found at McMater-Carr; http://www.mcmaster.com/ search for "vacuum gauge".

Hope this helps -D-

That I can't say, I do not have a Tetra pump to compare it with. I can say that if you were to "muffle" it as I described, a person on the other end of a telephone conversation would be hard pressed to hear it. Of course you only need to trigger it as often as required to maintain a vacuum.

I have a tetra, they're not exactly quiet, and I can only get mine to pull about 5 Hg. The way you describe it this sounds quieter. Have a bed bath and beyond near here, have to check it out.

How long do the batteries last?

It takes 6 AA size batteries and are very easy to replace (as apposed to the Reynolds model that requires removing a screw). The first set didn't seem to last too long and I thought it was going to be battery hog. But the second set has lasted nearly double the first (I use it a lot) so I'd say that it actually gets pretty good millage.

Thanks for all the replies and advice. I do have the compressor but the power demand to performance would be to low. I have a neighborhood Harbor Freight opening tomorrow so I can go and browse the bits and pieces in person. Sorry for the tardiness but my DSL to home port line failed and it took ATT a week to replace and 10 days to to reconnect the modem.

At any rate it looks line the eyewall of Ike will pass 40 miles away and I'll be on the dirty side. So Thursday afternoon I'll be packing the computer up in big ziplock bags and I've a lot of windows to board up. I'll be back when calm prevails, Thanks

Here's one that looks really good if you're prepared to push the envelope of extreme pumping. And you can get it on Ebay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/100-HP-CAST-IRON-NASH-VACUUM-PUMP-MODEL-CL-2002-4714_W0QQitemZ120144862336QQihZ002QQcategoryZ26227QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD1VQQcmdZViewItem

100 FUCKING HORSEPOWER!!! And the description states that it comes with a silencer! If you can find a way to hook up that silencer to your mouth instead of the pump, that silencer will come in real handy if you're considerate and don't want your neighbors to be disturbed by your screams! Twisted Evil
